What is CNC Millwork

CNC milling is a precise, computer-controlled machining process used to shape and cut materials such as wood, metal, plastic, and composites. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control—meaning every movement of the cutting tool is guided by a digital design file (CAD/CAM). This technology allows for exceptional accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency when creating parts, prototypes, and custom components.

How CNC Milling Works

The process begins with a digital 3D model or drawing of the desired part. That design is then converted into a machine-readable program that controls the milling machine’s movements.

A CNC milling machine uses a rotating cutting tool to remove material from a solid block (called a “workpiece”). By moving along multiple axes (typically X, Y, and Z), the cutter can produce complex shapes, precise holes, and detailed contours. The entire process is automated, ensuring tight tolerances and consistent quality from one piece to the next.

  • A design is created using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. This design is then translated into instructions (code) that the machine can understand, often in a language called G-code. The computer uses this code to control the machine's tools, directing their movement in multiple axes (like x, y, and z) to precisely cut or shape the material. 

  • Once the material has been prepared, the process is automated, with the computer controlling factors like toolpaths, cutting speed, and feed rates. 

  • During the machining process the machine operator continuously checks for quality control as the cut is completed

  • Upon completion of cut a woodworker checks the the final quality of the cut and adds and finishing touches such as sanding and painting.
